- name comes from "Magh Eó" or "Plain of the Yew (Trees)". Norman town of Mayo was built around the old Mayo Abbey. NB: www;mayo abbey in county mayo in the west of ireland says that "Mayo Abbey" is the village, not only the name of the abbey.;another websitee refutes that and says that only Mayo is the name of the town (not village).
