Definition
Species that directly or indirectly modulates the availability of resources by causing physical state changes in biotic or abiotic material and in so doing modifying, maintaining, or creating habitats. Examples are animals that affect an ecosystem by physically changing it or by being present in such great numbers that they have a disproportionate impact. Source: Encyclopedia of Biodiversity (2013)
