- built for merchant Shelton Fogus; purchased by Central Pacific Railroad co-founder Leland Stanford I (1824-1893) just before he became California's 8th governor; his widow, Jane Lathrop Stanford, gave the home to the Bishop of Sacramento as a children's home; after relocation of the latter, the home was sold to the state and is now known as the Leland Stanford State Historic Park
