Concept information
Preferred term
oocyte activation
Entry terms
- activation of the oocyte
Note
- Normally brought about by contact between spermatozoon and egg membrane, activation is the first stage in development and occurs independently of nuclear fusion. The net result is a block to further fusion and thus to polyspermy. In addition to the morphological changes, there are rapid changes in metabolic rate and an increase in protein synthesis from maternal mRNA. (Source : INRA)
