- Implantation generally occurs when the fertilized ovum has reached the blastocyst stage, or at the start of gastrulation after the appearance of secondary mesoderm. During the preimplantation stage of pregnancy, the endometrium provides an environment that sustains embryonic development, and then participates in the nidation process. (Source : INRA)
