Note

  • For livestock, the main advantage of artificial insemination is in the extensive use of superior males. With one ejaculate, several hundred cows or several tens of ewes and goats may be inseminated. Depending on species and husbandry systems, semen is collected at a semen production centre, then diluted and stored with antibiotics at +15°C (ram, boar, stallion) or frozen at -196°C (bull, buck), or is collected on the farm and diluted and used immediately (boar).
