- After ovulation or IVM, the oocyte arrests at metaphase of the second meiotic division when the first polar body (diploid) is extruded. Gamete fusion and entry of the sperm cell into the ooplasm triggers activation, characterized by the completion of the second meiotic division, the formation of a female pronucleus (haploid) and a second polar body.
