Nota
- The underlying mechanism for monozygous twin formation is the division of the embryo at some stage early in development. Separation of cells may theoretically occur before or after inner cell mass formation. Although totipotency of early blastomeres in many species has long been established, spontaneous separation and independent growth of these early cells before inner cell mass formation has never been observed. However, if such an event occurs in the human, the formation of separate amnions and chorions make this indistinguishable from dizygotic twinning. (Source : INRA)
