Scope note
- The two children in the painting were the daughters of the illustrator Frederick Barnard: Dolly, left, and Polly, right. They are shown lighting Japanese lanterns with tapers. The whole picture was painted out of doors during the brief period each evening when the light was at the same level, just after sunset. The title comes from the refrain of a popular song.
