Scope note

  • Caravaggio [Dublin] sometimes previously attr. to Gerrit van Honthorst; anonymous copies in Odessa, Florence, etc. The kiss of Judas is absent in the Gospel of John; instead, Christ identifies himself, and then Judas & the soldiers fall down. Lorenzetti's fresco (Assisi, S. Francesco, lower church) has Judas identifying Christ to soldiers by placing his hands on Christ (but no kiss). Pacher follows Gospel of John exactly (no kiss; Judas & soldiers falling backward). Caravaggio & Bausa include the kiss of Judas. Dario Pozzo's pt. has a soldier, Christ's hands are tied, & 2 apostles whose actions (& identities) are unclear. 2004: Caravaggio update: controversy erupts over whether Dublin painting is replica/non Caravggio copy of 'original' newly identified and authenticated, (art dealer, Rome)Art expert Dennis Mahon takes middle view: Rome work is the original; Caravaggio pricked design for transfer and created modified Dublin painting as well.
