- Short, pleated, wraparound garments, usually of tartan, developed mid-18th c. in the Highlands of Scotland as a simplified version of a full plaid; later adopted by the Highland regiments of the British army as an item of uniform; worn by men and boys as part of the national dress; also, similar plaid skirts worn by women and girls [AAT, alt.]
