Definition
- Medieval term for enclosed cupboards or storage niches enclosed by doors; often a receptacle for provisions to be given away as alms; remained in use chiefly for the ambries, enclosed in or hung on a wall, near the altar in churches in which sacramental vessels were kept [AAT, alt.]; today, in certain Christian churches, used synonymously with tabernacles
