- Term coined by collector Sir Arthur Gilbert to describe late 18th-19th c. mosaics made of very tiny tiles called "smalti filati", or microtesserae; used to reproduce works of art, in jewelry, on small boxes and tabletops, and in small portraits [Hiserote]
