Definition
- Term coined by Mikhail Bakhtin in RABELAIS AND HIS WORLD, and described by him as something that is created when the themes of the carnival twist, mutate and invert standard themes of societal makeup; he divided it into three forms: ritual spectacles; comic verbal compositions; and various genres of billingsgate or abusive language [www: Discovering the Carnivalesque]
