- Medieval version of Greek and Roman ballistae; an engine resembling a large crossbow but with two short arms stuck into two vertical bundles of rope, held under strong torsion within a stout frame; the outer ends of the arms were connected by a string, which could be pulled back by a claw attached to a windlass at the end of the shaft
