Definition
- Generally the interior, enclosed part of a Greek or Greco-Roman temple, encompassing any sub-chambers within the solid wall such as the vestibule, sanctuary or central chamber, and treasury. Sometimes used interchangeably with 'naos'; though this latter term has been limited by some scholars to refer solely to the central chamber. [AAT]; cf Naos
