Definition
- Consisted of a celure, or roof piece; a tester, or back piece; and one or two sets of valances; evolved from bed hangings; used by royalty, the clergy and the aristocracy as a symbol of social standing, prestige and wealth, in combination with a chair of estate, a footstool and a cushion; the entire ensemble could be raised on a dais for added impact [FURNITURE HISTORY]
