- Motifs representing the head or skull of an ox, often garlanded, common in classical style friezes [AAT]; the skull of a ram, ox, bull or goat in Greco-Roman classical ornament; in the Renaissance and to a greater degree in the 18th c., became a favorite decoration for any projecting element [Lewis and Darley]
