Definition
- Agrarian system, particularly in the north and west of Scotland but also in Scandinavia, whereby tenants rent and cultivate small holdings in a settlement area, with hill pasture in common for grazing; the tenant ("crofter") is allowed by law to purchase his holding ("croft") and to bequeath it
