Definition

  • Incident of a German ship (Hamburg-America [HAPAG] Line) that in 1939 carried Jewish refugees to Cuba, where their landing permits were invalidated by the Cuban government and their entry denied; eventually, most of the passengers ended up in Britain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands; many died in the Holocaust
