- Term coined by Jean Dubuffet, 1940s; rough, unsophisticated art created outside the context of the official artistic culture in order to satisfy the private, psychic needs of the maker; Dubuffet sought such art especially in the work of psychiatric patients and other insulated individuals; cf. Outsider art
