  • Refers to the English style in architecture and decorative arts during the reign of Queen Anne, 1702-1714, and known for its straightforward simplicity; in architecture it is characterized by red brick, sash windows and hipped roofs, applied largely to domestic structures; decorative arts reflect a move toward simple ornamentation with the use of plain veneers, ball and claw feet, cabriole legs and scallop shell motifs [AAT, alt.]
