- Christians who practiced public flagellation as a penance; while self-flagellation is an ancient form of religious expression, as a movement it began ca.1260 in Italy and spread across the Alps to Germany, Bohemia and Poland; died down late 13th c., with occasional reappearances since; prohibited by Pope Clement V, 1349; today thought to be practiced in secret
