- Various types of light portable firearms used in Europe, 14th-early 17th cs., fitted with a stock which allowed them to be held against the cheek, chest or shoulder; the first models had a hooklike projection on the underside of the barrel to absorb recoil, and were rested upon a surface when fired [AAT]
