- Refers to the period, culture and style of art, late 8th c.-early 12th cs., in Scandinavia and Scandinavian settlements overseas; derived from the old Norse noun "víkingr," and narrowly refers to sea pirates and raiders; however, it is usually applied to the broader realm of Scandinavian culture from this time period [AAT, alt.]
