Scope note
- Referred to in the plural as the Gabrades. The family came from Atra of Argyrople (Upper Chaldia); were powerful military leaders who virtually ruled the Theme (a Byzantine province is called a "theme") of Chaldia; one family member, St. Theodore Gabras, was also "strategus" (military general) of Trebizond and Coloneia .
