Definition
- Substances used on humans and other animals that destroy harmful microorganisms or inhibit their activity. They are distinguished from DISINFECTANTS, which are used on inanimate objects. Generically, any topical agent that destroys microbes. However, usage of the term is increasingly being confined to topical agents that prevent or reduce the transmission of SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES.
