Definition
- Large and highly vacuolated cells possessing many chloroplasts occuring in the interior cross-section of leaves, juxtaposed between the epidermal layers. Upper layer of columnar elongated cells beneath and perpendicular to the upper epidermis and constituting the primary area of photosynthesis. Irregular chlorophyll-bearing mesophyll cells interspersed with air spaces.
