Definition
- A genus in the family Monascaceae, order EUROTIALES. One species, Monascus purpureus, has multiple uses in traditional Chinese medicine (MEDICINE, CHINESE TRADITIONAL). Species in the family Monascaceae. M. purpureus is grown on cooked non-glutinous rice, producing a fermentation by-product known as red yeast rice. Red yeast rice contains a compound related to the statins that has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels.
