Osmotic Pressure

Type

  • mesh:Descriptor

Definition

  • The pressure required to prevent the passage of solvent through a semipermeable membrane that separates a pure solvent from a solution of the solvent and solute or that separates different concentrations of a solution. It is proportional to the osmolality of the solution. A change in the osmotic pressure caused by a dilution in the concentration of solution to which a cell is exposed. A sudden change in the osmotic pressure caused by a large change in the concentration of solution to which a cell is exposed, usually in order to cause it to burst and lose its contents. A sudden change in the osmotic pressure caused by a large increase in the concentration of solution to which a cell is exposed, usually in order to cause it to shrink in CELL VOLUME. A change in the osmotic pressure caused by an increase in the concentration of solution to which a cell is exposed. A sudden change in the osmotic pressure caused by a large dilution in the concentration of solution to which a cell is exposed, usually in order to cause it to burst and lose its contents. A change in the osmotic pressure caused by a change in the concentration of solution to which a cell is exposed.
