Definition
- A group (or class) of aquatic plants, including the streptophyte algae, that are the closest relatives to land plants (EMBRYOPHYTA). A division of VIRIDIPLANTAE which is equivalent to Charophyceae in some classifications and its parent in others. An order of aquatic plants in the class Charophyceae that are characterized by true multicellular organization and oogamous sexual reproduction. They comprise one group of the streptophyte algae.
