Definition

  • Chemical substances, excreted by an organism into the environment, that elicit behavioral or physiological responses from other organisms of the same species. Perception of these chemical signals may be olfactory or by contact. Allelochemicals in that the elicited response of the receiver is adaptively favorable to the receiver but not to the emitter. They are sometimes called attractants. Allelochemicals in that the elicited response of the receiver is adaptively favorable to the emitter but not to the receiver. They are sometimes called repellents (INSECT REPELLENTS) or deterrents. Chemical substances, excreted by an organism into the environment, that elicit behavioral or physiological responses from organisms of a different species . Perception of these chemical signals may be olfactory or by contact. Allelochemicals are subdivided into several groups depending on the response of the receiver and its adaptive effect to the emitter. They can be allomones, kairomones, or synomones. Allelochemicals in that the elicited response of the receiver is adaptively favorable to both emitter and receiver.
