Definition

  • The capability of an organism to survive and reproduce. The phenotypic expression of the genotype in a particular environment determines how genetically fit an organism will be. Genetic fitness measured as growth rate or reproductive success which is characterized by parameters such as egg production capacity, fertility, and number of offspring that pass on their genes. The relative likelihood that an organism will survive and pass on its genes to the next generation in comparison to organisms with a different gene or genotype. It is a mathematically calculable ratio determined from the average number of offspring contributed to a population by a particular genotype during one generation compared to the average number of offspring contributed by competing genotypes.
