Definition

  • Membrane proteins whose primary function is to facilitate the transport of molecules across a biological membrane. Included in this broad category are proteins involved in active transport (BIOLOGICAL TRANSPORT, ACTIVE), facilitated transport and ION CHANNELS. Any of a group of enzymes which mediate the phenomenon of active transport (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 5th ed). Although proteins in this class are sometimes referred to as enzymes they have not been accepted as an enzyme class by the Enzyme Commission.
