Definition

  • Diseases characterized by loss or dysfunction of myelin in the central or peripheral nervous system. The first region-restricted episode of CNS inflammatory demyelination in a patient. It is usually characterized by an acute monosymptomatic presentation of the optic nerves, brainstem, or spinal cord. It may not reoccur (isolated), or it may progress to MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.
