Definition
- A class in the phylum MOLLUSCA comprised of mussels; clams; OYSTERS; COCKLES; and SCALLOPS. They are characterized by a bilaterally symmetrical hinged shell and a muscular foot used for burrowing and anchoring. Equivalved edible marine mollusks that live wholly or partially in sand or mud. Clams usually do not have larvae (glochidia) and thus do not require a host for development. Marine bivalve mollusks especially of the genus MYTILUS or freshwater bivalve mollusks, especially the genera UNIO and ANODONTA. Mussels usually have a larva (glochidia), and require a fish host to complete development.
