Chemical substances, excreted by an organism into the environment, that elicit behavioral or physiological responses from other organisms of the same species. Perception of these chemical signals may be olfactory or by contact. Allelochemicals in that the elicited response of the receiver is adaptively favorable to the receiver but not to the emitter. They are sometimes called attractants. Allelochemicals in that the elicited response of the receiver is adaptively favorable to the emitter but not to the receiver. They are sometimes called repellents (INSECT REPELLENTS) or deterrents.
