Definition
- An RS Canum Venaticorum star is a type of eruptive variable that is also a close binary system and shows modest light variations of up to 0.2 magnitude with a period close to that of the orbital period. Superimposed on these short-period changes are longer-term cycles of chromospheric activity, similar to the solar cycle, that last 1 to 4 years. RS Canum Venaticorum itself (BD +36° 2344, HD 114519) is of spectral type F5 V+K2 IV and lies in the constellation Canes Venaticorum at RA 13h 08m 18s, Dec +36° 12'.0.
