  • A high-velocity star is a star traveling faster than 60 to 100 km/s (definitions vary) relative to the average motion of star's in the solar neighborhood. High-velocity stars typically belong to the halo population and travel around the galactic center in eccentric orbits, often of large inclination to the galactic plane.
