- Scoliosis is a skeletal defect characterized by abnormal curvature of the spinal column away from the midline. Neuromuscular disease and congenital malformations can cause scoliosis, but most cases are idiopathic, or without a known cause. [Source: Encyclopedia of Global Health; Scoliosis]
