Definition
- For more than 50 years, the Apgar scoring system has been used universally in the delivery room to assess the overall health and integrity of the newborn immediately after birth. A score of 0 to 2 is assigned in each of five areas at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. [Source: Encyclopedia of Human Development; Apgar Score]
