Definition
- Sickle-cell anemia (Hb S) is an inherited autosomal (“non-sex” chromosomes) recessive blood disease that affects millions of people throughout the world. It is caused by a mutation in the gene for beta hemoglobin (an oxygen-carrying molecule),producing a change in the shape of the red blood cell into a sickle shape.
