second shift

Definition

  • A term coined by Arlie Hochschild in her 1989 book by the same name, “the second shift” refers to the household labor remaining at the end of a workday. In single-headed and dual-earner households, considerable work remains to be done at home, whether child care, cooking, cleaning, or other household chores.
