Preferred term
smokeless tobacco
Definition
- BEFORE THE MASS production of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco—primarily chewing tobacco and snuff—was very common in the United States and other parts of the world. Although smokeless tobacco use has declined in most developed countries, having been overtaken by cigarette use during the 20th century, a variety of traditional nonsmoked products remains popular in many regions.
