management of chronic illnesses at school: asthma
Definition
- According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway, characterized by increased mucous secretions that results in bronchoconstriction and bronchospasms of the smooth muscles and airway remodeling. Airway remodeling changes lung structure permanently; it may thicken the linings of the airway, and increase mucous production and vascularity in the airway.
