Definition

  • Encuentros, a Spanish-language term for “encounter,” is most closely associated with the indigenous rights and alternative globalization movements of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The term came to international political prominence in reference to assemblies supporting the Zapatista Army of National Liberation in its fourteen-year uprising against the Mexican government beginning January 1, 1994, the date on which the North American Free Trade Agreement was implemented.
