advisory committees

Definition

  • Advisory committees provide input to planning and evaluation of the decennial census and the American Community Survey (ACS) from groups of people not directly employed by the Census Bureau who are chosen for their particular expertise or perspective and who serve on a volunteer basis. Since 1973 all advisory committees appointed by the executive branch have operated under the 1972 Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), which provides for open deliberations and advance notice of meetings in the Federal Register.
