Preferred term

alterity

Definition

  • From a semantic point of view, alterity means a relation of being different from something or someone, while identity means a relation of sameness or similarity (including the difference or sameness with oneself at a different point in time). It stands to reason, then, that the concept of alterity should be used as often as is the concept of identity. [Source: International Encyclopedia of Organization Studies; Alterity]
