object relations theory

Definition

  • The psychodynamic theory that the mind and the psychic structures that comprise it evolve out of human interactions, rather than out of biologically derived tensions (Freudian theory). Instead of being motivated by tension reduction, human beings are motivated by the need to establish and maintain human relationships.
