Zapatista rebellion
Definition
- On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberatión National) (EZLN) launched a rebellion of mainly indigenous peasants of Mayan origin in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. The uprising heralded an innovative autonomy movement in which many indigenous communities in Chiapas began implementing local self-governance, while the rebel group continued pressing a broad agenda, including rights for Indigenous Peoples and for other marginalized populations.
